Retina Foundation Nutrition Study

We are currently enrolling 9- to 12-month old children in a nutrition study. This study is being conducted by the Retina Foundation of the Southwest in collaboration with Martek Biosciences.

  • During the 1st year, your baby receives the long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPs) needed for eye and brain development in breast milk or infant formula.
  • Although brain development continues during the 2nd and 3rd years of life, the average toddler in the U.S. consumes foods containing less than 40 mg LCPs per day.
  • The U.S. Food & Drug Administration has not established a recommended daily intake for LCPs in children, but many leading health authorities recommend 150 mg each day.

If you participate:

  • you will be asked to add a packet of “sprinkles” twice a day to foods that your child normally eats.
  • you will receive either LCP sprinkles or sprinkles without LCPs.
  • your child will have vision, school readiness, IQ, executive function tests, and you will be asked to complete questionnaires.
  • you will not be charged for the sprinkles or any tests.
  • you will receive gift cards for gasoline, food, and/or children's products at each visit.

Please feel free to discuss this study with your pediatrician. If you are interested in the study, please contact the Study Coordinator at (214) 363-3911 ext. 110 or ycastane@retinafoundation.org before your baby’s 1st birthday.
