We are currently enrolling 9- to 12-month old children in a nutrition study. This study is being conducted by the Retina Foundation of the Southwest in collaboration with Martek Biosciences.
During the 1st year, your baby receives the long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPs) needed for eye and brain development in breast milk or infant formula.
Although brain development continues during the 2nd and 3rd years of life, the average toddler in the U.S. consumes foods containing less than 40 mg LCPs per day.
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration has not established a recommended daily intake for LCPs in children, but many leading health authorities recommend 150 mg each day.
If you participate:
you will be asked to add a packet of “sprinkles” twice a day to foods that your child normally eats.
you will receive either LCP sprinkles or sprinkles without LCPs.
your child will have vision, school readiness, IQ, executive function tests, and you will be asked to complete questionnaires.
you will not be charged for the sprinkles or any tests.
you will receive gift cards for gasoline, food, and/or children's products at each visit.
Please feel free to discuss this study with your pediatrician. If you are interested in the study, please contact the Study Coordinator at (214) 363-3911 ext. 110 or ycastane@retinafoundation.org before your baby’s 1st birthday.
